Heather and Ashlee’s Portrait Session

If I’ve heard it once, I’ve heard it a thousand times: “I hate having my picture taken!”  Trust me, the more you put up the fight in front of the camera, the harder it will be to create artistic results.  So when you get in front of the camera, relax, lighten up, and try to have some fun.

Just relax!

Think of it this way, do your friends look better with a frown or a smile?  Of course they look better with a smile.  People look better when they’re happy.  That doesn’t mean smiling will turn you into a super model.  Let Photoshop attempt that feat.  But do yourself a favor,  next time you’re being photographed, ENJOY it.  If you want to increase your odds of looking great, call me.  Let’s schedule a sitting and capture the happy and beautiful YOU!

To see how happiness works in your favor, check out a couple images from a recent sitting for Ashlee and Heather.  Looks like they had fun!

Babies, aren't they cute!

There’s an old saying in Hollywood:  Never work with Kids or Pets.  I suppose the same holds true for portrait photography.  But, you know what?  When the results are good, they’re real good!  Wouldn’t you agree?

Harvey High School E-City Entrepreneurs Donate To Komen NE Ohio

You may have read previous posts about the great kids at Harvey High School, Painesville, Ohio who worked hard to start a business as participants in E-City.  The E-City program is a joint effort between Harvey High School Business Teacher Ms. Nell Rapport and Mr. Tim Kerhes of Big Brothers Big Sisters.

Students Francisco Carlin, Malena Hyde, Craig MacNiven Eric Rodriguez and Angel Walker, spend the semester creating a business, sold product and wrote a business plan.  They named their company “Success 5”, purchased and resold multi colored ink pens with a built in highlighter and some pretty cool lanyards.

Success 5 was one of the three companies started by students in Ms. Rapport’s business class.  At the end of the semester all three of the student businesses presented their business plans in a competition.

Success 5

Students Francisco Carlin, Malena Hyde, Craig MacNiven Eric Rodriguez and Angel Walker, started their business Success 5, sold product and wrote a business plan.

I was part of a group of mentors that included Gladys Benetiz-Reilley, Tony Brooks and Tony Gagliardi.  Mentors met with the students once a week, acting as a “Board Of Directors.  In the end Success 5 managed to generate enough sales to repay their seed money loan, make a donation (10% of pen sales) to Komen of NE Ohio and put some money in their own pockets!

If you ask the students and the mentors, my guess is they’ll all say they learned something!  Congratulations Francisco, Malena, Craig, Eric and Angel.  You guys did a great job!  Your parents, teachers, family, friends and our community should all be proud of all of you.  I am!

Speakers And Presenters: Let The Photographer Be Your Friend

Guest speakers and meeting organizers usually present for civic or professional organizations. The organization may have a professional photographer or a member on hand to photograph the event.  After all, they may wish to publish photographs for marketing purposes on the organization’s web site, blog or newsletter.

When the audience listens to you speak, they see facial expressions, hear your voice, and watch your mouth as you make your presentation.

A Thomas Image - Photography
Figure 1

Everything the audience sees and hears combine and flow smoothly making the speaker sound normal.

However, the camera freezes a single instant in time.  The camera doesn’t listen or see as we do.  The camera catches the facial expression, the shape of your mouth and your lips just as you speak in a single instant (See figure 1).  Trust me these expressions can be hilarious.

So do the organization, the photographer and yourself a favor.  Think about working with the photographer!

He/she should be easy to spot – they’re the one with a camera getting paid to shoot the event… although there may be multiple photographers present.

As if there wasn’t enough pressure on you in front of a crowd, now you’re saying – “A photographer?”

Don’t worry; here are a few tips to help create good images that make you look like the entertaining, confident and expert speaker that you are!

Do’s and Don’ts of working with a photographer

DO look your best

Regarding hair and clothing; most speakers will make sure everything is fixed, tucked, zipped, the tie is straight and the hair is combed.  The camera will catch everything little thing.

DO pose a bit

As you move about the room or podium and see the photographer, go ahead and pose. We’re not talking about posing for a portrait, but a quick stop or pause, look at the photographer and smile (See figure 2).

A Thomas Image - Photography 2

Figure 2

In the beginning it may seem long and drawn out, but over time it will become second nature. A careful intentional pose will help the photographer and he/she will notice your cues. Soon the photographer will pick up on your timing and these “poses” will become almost invisible to the audience and have a natural flow.

DO stand up straight

All speakers or emcees should have good posture, so remember to stand up straight. If you’re the type to work the podium or use certain movements or body positions, don’t worry.  It’ll all look great when photographed.  The action will stand out.

DO consider your props and flip charts

Consider your props and “flip-charts”.  Colorful and bold lettering and graphics photograph well and help tell the story.  Besides they’re easier for your audience to read. Also consider your position relative to these items and the photographer.  Pause when holding the maker or pointer, rest it right on the chart, and then give a glancing look at the photographer.

And here are a few don’ts…

DON’T worry too much about movements or expressions

While it’s true that animated speakers or those that use gestures photograph well and are more likely to look calm and professional when photographed, you can easily mimic a few of these gestures when you intentionally pose for the photographer.  And if you’re not the most animated speaker, try becoming one.

DON’T hide the awards

If you’re handing out an award, turn yourself and the recipient in the direction of the photographer and smile for the camera.  Don’t forget about the award; hold it in front of you (right side up is helpful) so it’s visible to the camera. If the award is bright white or behind glass, tip it forward and downward to minimize glare.

DON’T neglect the handshake

Hold onto to the other person’s hand, stop the handshake so the photographer can catch that moment and again, look at the photographer. This makes for a great shot. You can even prompt the other person by pointing to the photographer or go so far as to quietly tell the other person to look at the camera.  Don’t worry; chances are the audience won’t hear you direct the other person.  And if they do – so what?

DON’T be quick to run off

A good photographer will want to take multiple exposures of the moment.  You’ll be given “nod” or quick wave when the photographer is finished.

A guest speaker is special at an event or a meeting.  Take the time to work with the photographer.  It lets the audience know they’re attending something special.  Why shouldn’t you appear special to them?  Attendees will also feel the event or meeting was a wise use of their time when they see it being photographed.

All you have to do is pause, look at the camera and smile.  You’re happy to be talking about your favorite topic – right?  Let it show and smile. The images will speak for themselves.  Keep these simple suggestions in mind and you’ll look like the pro that you are!

You Only Like Me In The Western Pacific!

Scuba divers spend large sums of money traveling to the western Pacific Ocean in search of the beautiful but venomous Lionfish.  Returning divers are eager to share even mediocre images of these creatures to amaze divers and non-divers alike.  They are indeed a beautiful creature.

Lionfish in Vieques, PR

But move those same adventurous divers to the western Atlantic and the situation changes drastically.  Lionfish in the Atlantic are the basis for fear, concern, studies and hunting.  What’s makes the Atlantic different from the Pacific?  Lionfish are not native to the western Atlantic.  They feed on small reef fish, commercial fish, shrimp and crabs.  Since these invaders are not native, their prey have not been able to develop a defense mechanism.  So their population now grows unchecked.

On a recent trip to Vieques, PR I had the opportunity to see firsthand the extent of their invasion.  I would not be uncommon to spot 6 to 12 Lionfish of various sizes on a single dive.  Many of the divers working for local dive shops would plan their own recreational dives to hunt the invaders.  Hunting would certainly provide a tasty change in their meals and help with population control.

Lionfish dorsal, pectoral and anal fins have hypodermic like spines that carry venom to their prey.  This same venom can be very painful to humans and requires medical attention.  In addition Lionfish have no western Atlantic predators to help control or overtake the current population.  So their numbers are on the rise with no limit in sight.

A Thomas Image Vieques 11 057
Lionfish have hypodermic like venomous spines.

It has not been confirmed yet as to how this graceful creature was introduced to these waters.  But experts suspect aquarium owners of dumping unwanted specimens into the ocean and they may have been released from large aquarium facilities as the result of hurricane activity.

Lion fish have been spotted, photographed or documented from Miami north to North Carolina, The Gulf of Mexico, Bermuda, Bahamas, Turks and Caicos, Cayman Islands, Cuba, Jamaica, Haiti Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Mexico, Belize, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panamá, Columbia and Venezuela.  At this time it is not known how well they tolerate cooler water temperatures.  As a result predicting the limits of their potential territory is difficult.

There does appear to be one containment method on the horizon – eat them.  They are reported to be quite tasty.  A Lionfish cookbook has been published and can be found at:

Eat ‘em to get rid of ‘em!

Although it much more convenient to see these beauties in the Atlantic/Caribbean, Most would rather people have to travel to the western Pacific for the view.  Only time will tell what the future hold for this beautiful invader.

HHS Students listen to Entrepreneurs

On January 5th, 2011, Harvey High School students were treated to presentations by two local entrepreneurs.  The students most likely thought this was just a great chance to not have to listen to their teacher.  But all eyes were fixed on the presenters:  Ms Jennifer Pealer of Jennifer And Company plus Mr. John Gadd of Flozio.

The students in attendance participate in the E-City program through the business class taught by Ms. Nell Rapport.  E-City allows high school students to learn about entrepreneurship by starting and operating their own business, in addition to writing a business plan.

The program is funded through Big Brothers – Big Sisters of North East Ohio.  In addition to listening to speakers today, three of the student companies repaid their seed funding loan commitment to Big Brother – Big Sister.  The loan repayments were made through profits from product sales for each individual student run business.

You can see how the presentation went by looking at images on the following slide show link:

Professional Head Shot – Just VAIN?

Why do people use head shots?  After all we’re not all actors.  Isn’t it just a case of thinking too much about one’s self?

Today employers are using social media in their recruiting process.  Many professional people are using social media to promote themselves professionally and grow their personal “brand”.  How should you be perceived by other professionals?  I know, I ask a lot of questions don’t I.  But think about all these questions.

As a business professional you want to have a professional brand.  That means:

  1. Be easily recognized at a first client meeting.
  2. Including a head shot to promote a presentation.
  3. Allow prospects to feel comfortable working with you.
  4. Showing the market you are confident about yourself.

Here’s a recent head shot for a long time friend of mine.  Thanks Carol!

Wedding Photography For The Bride/Groom; Part 5 – Wedding Photography Copyrights

This is one of the most misunderstood topics – “copyright”. As soon as the creator of an image pulls the trigger, they are the owner of the image. Not YOU! It doesn’t matter if you’ve hired a professional, weekend shoot and burner, student or volunteer. All created images are protected under federal copyright laws. Violation of copyright laws puts you at risk legally.

You have to negotiate the rights to the photographer’s images. Those rights should be spelled out to you in writing. Read them in detail. The more rights you want, the more you will pay. If the photographer delivers a CD of camera images make sure you have the right to copy or print the images and get the rights spelled out in writing. Even the local discount warehouse does not want to wind up in court for printing an image that doesn’t belong to you. Back to your friend with the big expensive looking camera and a big lens, make sure they understand what usage rights you expect.

I’ve only touched the surface on wedding photography. I could go on and on. But this should get you started. Congratulations on your engagement and have a wonderful wedding and life. Feel free to email me with questions.

Wedding Photography For The Bride/Groom; Part 4 – Wedding Photography Contracts

A bride called my office needing a photographer on short notice. We talked about the wedding details, I quoted a price, then sent the contract to the bride. The fiancé being an attorney decided he’d flex his legal muscles and nit-pick the contract. I agreed to some wording changes, but drew the line at one particular clause. Flexing his vast legal expertise pushed for the removal of the clause or we could not strike a deal. I said OK, no deal. Oh to be a fly on the wall when he told his fiancé he blew off the photographer, 2 weeks before the wedding.

EXPECT your photographer to provide a contract outlining; services, deliverable, dates, times, location(s), extra print prices, photographer name, usage rights and fees. Don’t be afraid of the word “contract”. The contract should also protect you. My earlier attorney example doesn’t mean you can’t negotiate. Just realize how far you’re willing to go. If the photographer won’t provide a written contract, run, don’t walk, run the other direction. You have the right to know all this information and what your rights are in case there is a delivery or service problem.

If you’ve decided to have your friend with the big expensive looking camera and a big lens shoot your wedding, then give your friend a list including shots you expect, arrival time, departure time and description of the deliverable. Make it clear what you expect. If your friend doesn’t have backup equipment, then get a back up photographer! You can’t smile for the photographer is you’re worried to death about equipment failure!

One more thing, what happens if you lose the CD after delivery? What will it take to replace those images? Most professional photographers have procedures in place to duplicate and back up all image files. Should you lose your CD (fire, flood, the dog ate them or you just plain misplaced them), can you get a duplicate CD from the photographer and what will it cost?

In the next post let’s talk about Wedding Photography Copyrights.

Wedding Photography For The Bride/Groom; Part 3 – Wedding Photography Budgets

My studio A Thomas Image is in northeast Ohio. So here are some thoughts on budgets. Disclaimer: The prices you experience may vary from the ranges listed below.

A professional photographer and assistant(s) can range from $1500 and way up for the entire day. Your wedding party size and clothing may impact the need for an assistant. Assistants are generally photographers also. So an assistant will cost extra.
Shoot and Burners range from $500 to $2000 per day. When you’re done you have a disk of images and you have to manage everything. Make sure you understand the copyright terms and who’s responsible when the print comes out lousy.
All others including students and amateurs alike, $200 to $500 per day.
When the photographer is FREE – run the other direction. For the most part, something is likely to go wrong. Or make sure you understand why the service is FREE. If you go this route, read the post on Contracts.

Remember what I said about your comfort reflecting in the final product. Do you want to worry about losing the photographer, just because a camera battery died? Make sure the photographer has back up equipment for everything, camera, flash, lenses, batteries and tripod. Altogether you’re looking at tens of thousands of dollars in “stuff”. A professional will have all the backup equipment AND importantly will know how to use the equipment.

Let’s continue the discussion on FEES. Don’t think the fee you’re paying just covers photography services on the day of your wedding (unless you get a CD at the end of the day). Professional photographers will spend time with you before the wedding, spend time with you the day of the wedding, spend hours preparing your proofs, spend hours editing images for printing or burning to CD and preparing the deliverable. You pay for all this time. That’s why we’re expensive! We pay for the most up to date equipment, pay for an office, pay our mortgage, eat and maybe take a vacation. Just like you! We love what we do, but photographers like YOU, want to make a living.

In the next post let’s talk about Wedding Photography Contracts.

Wedding Photography For The Bride/Groom; Part 2 – Wedding Photographer Selection Criteria

Just because your friend hired someone doesn’t mean that’s the right photographer for you. Photographers have different styles and Personalities. The more creative the images, the more comfortable you want to be with your photographer. If you’re uncomfortable with your photographer, it will show in your images. Then you’ll be very disappointed in the results.

Any photographer should be able to show you samples of their work. Meet with them to view their work and talk to them. Please, don’t, don’t, don’t, and I’ll repeat don’t hire someone without meeting them. You can’t gain comfort with someone via texting or email. Whatever your price bracket, sit down with the photographer and get to know them. If you’re only paying $200 for a day of service, don’t expect the photographer to spend a lot of time with you before the wedding. Does meeting and talking with the photographer take time? Yes, but you’ll be glad you invested the time.

Pro photographers will have a lot of equipment, they know how to use it and they understand lighting. Understanding light is very, very, very, very important. Get my drift here?? Just because your friend has what you think is a Big Fancy Expensive camera and a Big Fancy Expensive lens doesn’t mean they understand how to use the camera or understand light.

In the next post let’s talk about Wedding Photography Budgets.

Wedding Photography For The Bride/Groom (A 5-Part Series)

I’ve heard way too many newly married couples complain because they went “cheap” on the photography. Often brides consult wedding planning sites and ask the question: What should a photographer cost? After the wedding photography “horror stories” and all the questions about cost, I thought I’d try to give some insights into this thing called wedding photography. To make this an easy read, I’ve broken the discussion into a series of posts, 5 parts all together:
Part 1 – Wedding Planning Sites
Part 2 – Wedding Photographer Selection Criteria
Part 3 – Wedding Photography Budgets
Part 4 – Wedding Photography Contracts
Part 5 – Wedding Photography Copyrights

This way you can read the portions that interest you.

Wedding Photography For The Bride/Groom; Part 1 – Wedding Planning Sites

Type “wedding planning web sites” into Google and you’ll get over 600,000 hits. That’s a lot! Remember this: sites exist for one reason, to make money. So, somewhere, someone pays money. Either you the bride or the vendor using the site will pay something. In some cases you can get contact information for a vendor or you can broadcast your wedding details to a group of vendors and request a quote. If you’re using a wedding planning site and access to a “boat-load” of vendors is free, than the vendors are paying the fee.

Many photographers don’t publish a price list on sites like these. Why? There are too many variables. When you work with these sites, give a realistic estimate of your budget. If you want a $200 photographer, say so. Yes, we pay to get your lead from sites like these. Ever heard the saying; “There’s no such thing as a Free Lunch!” Yeah you thought everything is free on wedding planning sites. Photographer wedding fees go towards paying for information from these sites. So you end up paying one way or another. Don’t expect a photographer/business person to pay for a $200 opportunity, let alone try to “out-bid” 4 other low-ballers. We’re not interested.

If you are using a wedding planning site to research pricing, go ahead and start with your low-end budget number. Sit back and see what happens. When most likely, no one responds, up the number and wait again. Remember what I said earlier about paying for a $200.00 opportunity!

In the next post we’ll discuss Wedding Photographer Selection Criteria.
