No Shadow Product Photography

No Shadow Product Photography!

I use Google Alerts to send me web notices about photography topics.  One day a listing about shooting whites without shadows caught my attention.  I clicked on the link which took me to a Youtube video by Alex Koloskov.  Alex is a photographer based in Atlanta and creates some gorgeous photography.  You can learn more at: http://www.koloskov.com/.

After watching the video, it was obvious just how simple and effective Alex’s technique is. The beauty is in the simplicity.  At some point I knew I wanted to try his technique.  A client contacted me with an assignment that was perfect for Alex’s method.  I already had a 30 by 60 inch sheet of plastic to use, so it was off to the local hardware store (where they’ve known me on a first name basis for years!) to build a table.

As most everyone who does home projects knows, often, there is a second and better design.  So I came up with a plastic PVC pipe table design.  Not fully seeing the approximate size of the plastic sheet used by Alex, mine was too large to allow heat forming over the kitchen stove.  It now sits in the corner of the studio with ripples and a burn spot!

That meant another trip to the local home center for another sheet of clear plastic.  That also meant the table needed to be modified.  So, off to the local hardware store again for more supplies. So design number 2 is shown in the photos attached.

The PVC tubing table has glued joints.  By not gluing all the joints, the table can be broken down for easy storage when not in use.  Using clamps allows me to change the clear plastic sheet positioning to suit my needs.

In some of my first product shots using the table I noticed the frame reflecting on some of the product surfaces.  A coat of black paint on the frame fixed that issue.  So The photos included show the table and clamping system and a quick shot of a plastic hairspray bottle to show how the shadows are GONE!  Alex, a trip of the shutter to you for inspiring me!  Thanks.

Portrait Photography Dilemma – Solved!

Photography, Portrait

Our Christmas portrait in South Carolina for 2012.

Families are becoming more “transient” as time goes by.  Meaning, as family members move for job opportunities more frequently now.  Most every Christmas, my wife’s brother, his wife and two boys join us for Christmas day.  This year due to job opportunities, one family member moved and was not able to come home for the holidays.  So he and his “bride” extended an invitation for us to join them in their new home in South Carolina.

As we gathered together, the camera and tripod came out as usual.  Only this time we were able to shoot some portraits on the beach in South Carolina along with the typical christmas tree backdrop settings.  I normally print out a 5X7 for each family and send it after the holiday.  This year I had a lot of poses for print for sending.  Then it dawned on me.  Why not group them together as a collage and have one printed for each family unit.  So that’s what I did.  As you can see we have the entire group on the beach, a beach title, a group in front of the tree and in this case a photo of my wife and I together.

All-in-all, I think it turned out nice.  Everyone had multiple photos of the family and one of them by themselves all in one 8X10 print.  Dilemma-Solved!

New Portrait Photography Backdrop Becomes Name Badge

In an earlier post I talked about my new brick wall backdrop.  At a resent event, my good friend Donald Wayne McLeod pointed out my name badge was missing.  I actually forgot to bring it.  So Donald Wayne suggested putting a spare in my car just for such an occasion – He was right!  At the same time I was not excited about the name badge I had created and wanted something a bit more creative.

Well my new brick wall backdrop get me thinking.  So I set up the camera on the tripod, got out the camera remote and got started.  Below you’ll find the original image I shot and the version of it that is my new name badge.  Yes I did make two badges and one goes into the car as a spare.  Thanks DWM!

A Suggestion Made About My Recent Photography Studio Newsletter!

In the A Thomas Image studio E-Blast for October 2012, I mentioned a new brick backdrop.  A friend of mine asked: “Why didn’t you include a picture of the new backdrop”?  I actually thought about doing just that, but I was in such a hurry to get the announcement out, I omitted the image.  Well, “duh” on me!

Today, I acquired another muslin backdrop.  It dawned on me this might be a good time to announce the muslin backdrop, include a photo showing it and update everyone on the brick backdrop.  The muslin backdrop is a dark charcoal in color with some splashes of purple and tan.  It’s large enough to drop from the studio ceiling and cover the floor.  It should work very well for the right portrait photography sitting.

Photograper announces portrait backdrop

Tom Szabo of A Thomas Image is posed with the newest studio mulin backdrop.

Some portrait clients might like a warehouse or loft theme for their sitting.  The new brick backdrop will accommodate that very nicely.  Lighting can be adjusted to give the appearance of being outdoors in an alley or indoors near a window.  It’s neat for that “urban” feel.  With a little creativity, graffiti can be added to the image.  Graffiti can be customized to include client names, graduation year, special announcements or the name of your band.

Brick wall background for portrait photography

Brick texture for that urban look.

So now I just need someone to schedule a sitting where we can use these backdrops.  Any takers?  I also hope this blog post helps redeem me from my e-blast photo blunder, he said sheepishly!

Kids Sports Photography Is Such Fun

There used to be an old saying in Hollywood: “Never work with Kids or Pets!” Occasionally I feel that way with kids. As studio photographers we’ve all had our share of child melt-downs that cause Mom & Dad embarrassment and the need to reschedule a sitting. A recent assignment proved that old Hollywood adage to not be true. I had the opportunity to photograph the Lake County Lightning Lacrosse teams.

The club consisted of boys teams and girls teams ranging from 3rd grade to 8th grade. What a blast working with the kids. First of all their uniforms are blue and yellow. When combined with the green grass, the colors just popped. The kids were into having their portraits taken and there were smiles galore.

When time permitted, there were some opportunities to try some poses that took a little more time to set up. Such was the pose of the players facing into the net. This pose was made easier by using the “live-view” feature and the pivot feature of the LCD screen. I simply lifted the end of the net, then slide the camera into the rear of the net, adjust the display angle, compose the pose using the live-view feature and shoot.

By working with my local pro lab, I was able to use and customize some templates like the “memory-mate” composite. This allowed combining a player portrait with a team photo into one print. Lacrosse is not as popular as baseball, football or soccer. So the background for the memory-mate print needed to be created from scratch. By borrowing some props from one of the coaches, the custom background could be laid out and shot on a nice sunny day.

The magazine cover shot was a matter of thinking up a magazine title and making up some feature article titles around the player image. The article titles were geared towards the players and were fun to think up. I look forward to this assignment next year and already have some ideas to change things up a bit.

Photographer and Scuba Diving Instructor Now A MAST Board Member

On April 14, 2012 the Maritime Archeological Survey Team unanimously voted area photographer and scuba diving instructor Tom Szabo to its board of directors.  The Maritime Archeological Survey Team, also known as MAST is a nonprofit avocational group.  Members work to document Ohio’s historic underwater resources. MAST was formed March, 2000, and is composed of volunteers who support and participate in research, documentation, underwater archaeological surveys, and educational workshops.  MAST also manages buoy markers for 10 shipwrecks in Lake Erie.  Divers can tie off their boat to the buoys.  This prevents anchor damage to the wrecks.

Tom Szabo is a photographer and owns A Thomas Image, a commercial, portrait, underwater and wedding photography studio in Concord Twp., Ohio.  In addition, he is a PADI certified Master Scuba Diver Trainer diving instructor. Tom has taken MAST classes, worked on many underwater archeological surveys.  “I have been very impressed with the level of volunteers and their commitment of time and work to support MAST” said Szabo.

Scuba diving in Lake Erie is different than diving in the Caribbean.  MAST divers don’t seem to mind.  Diving a wreck in Lake Erie provides a sense of excitement not found elsewhere.  It’s that sense of exploration by members that caught Tom’s attention and made him very interested in MAST.  Szabo said “I look forward to working with everyone associated with MAST and hope I can make a positive contribution to their work!”

Anyone interested in MAST can learn more at the organizations web site: http://www.ohiomast.org.  Tom Szabo can be reached using contact information found at the studio web site: http://www.blog.athomasimage.com.

And The Winner Is…..

During the Shop Lake County Expo 2012, I had my oversized I-Phone on display at my booth.  Visitors were encouraged to stop by and be photographed behind the display.  The contest was to see who could get the most “likes” after their photo was put up on the studio page.

After the deadline was over, I checked the count to determine the winner.  I’m pleased to announce that Ms Joey White was the winner.  As it turns out, Joey had a pretty good weekend at Shop Lake County.  Her booth won best of show.  So congratulations on a job well done Joey!

The Executive Head Shot With A Twist

Over the years, I developed a professional relationship with business owner Kordell Norton.  That relationship has turned into a great personal relationship.  I’m pleased to call him my friend.  Kordell is a recognized sales, marketing, and motivational speaker. He is known as an “out-of-the-box thinker”.

Typical executive head shot

Kordell Norton - sales, marketing speaker and out of the box thinker.

As a motivational speaker, Kordell uses a lot of props and storytelling to support his presentations.  This has become part of his brand.  If you view his website, you won’t notice stock images.  He relies on promoting his business by promoting himself.  He is the product.

Executive head shot with dry marker props.

Head shot of speaker with dry markers as props.

For the next version of his website, Kordell wanted to update his photo portfolio.  So he called me to schedule another sitting.  As we talked, he described the type of shots he wanted.  It became apparent that he put a lot of thought into his list.  I could see how he was continuing to build his brand.

Relaxed pose for an executive head shot

Kordell a bit more relaxed.

One of his clients described him as watching popcorn pop without the lid.  That’s a pretty good visual – wouldn’t you agree?  So Kordell decided to incorporate “popcorn” into his brand.  It sounds like one of the popcorn images will make it on his business card.

Kordell - like watching pocorn popping without the lid.

So if you’re like many of us small business owners, you realize that you are the product.  Give some thought about to how you market yourself.  How are you building your brand?  Does your photo portfolio support your brand?  Maybe my friend Kordell can give you some inspiration. Check him out at:

The “Scattered Family” Portrait Photography

Portrait of the scatered family

When's the last time your family sat for a family portrait?

When’s the last time you actually had the entire family together in one room?  If you’re like most today, you have family members living in multiple states.  Or if you’re like me, I still live in my home-town, but my Mom lives in another state!

So if it’s difficult to get everyone in the same room, when is the last time you had a portrait created for the entire family?  For some reason that just doesn’t seem to happen much anymore.  Recently a business acquaintance of mine had his entire family in town for the Christmas holiday.  It wasn’t my friend, but his wife who made the decision to have the portrait created.

The good thing about the time we live in is; all of the family members will be able to use technology to view proofs and make decisions on the selection of that perfect family portrait.  They’ll be viewing proofs on-line and talking via email to make their selections.

Ahhh, time just keeps marching forwards – doesn’t it?

Having Photography Fun With An Oversized I-Phone

Recently some of my business friends and I promoted our businesses during the local holiday lighting ceremony.  Since this was the first time anyone exhibited during the event and our location was somewhat remote, no one was sure what size crowd to expect.  Part of the strategy was for my studio to set up the oversized I-Phone prop out in the entry area to draw in the crowd.

It was intriguing to see how people had to be encouraged to use the I-Phone prop with their own smart phone.  But after some cajoling, they took advantage
of the opportunity.  Here’s a couple of images from that night.  It was fun to see some folks get a bit crazy.  Hope you enjoy!

Photographer, A Member Of Award Winning Creative Team

Photographer Apex Award

Lake Communicators 2011 Apex Gold Award

My good friend and client Erica Kosinski had a vision for a combined educational and marketing periodical for a local supplier of architectural
granite.  Realizing that “stock” photography would not convey an accurate view of the business.   Some images used were obtained from the client’s partner businesses.  A gap was present in the images needed to convey the entire message.  Erica decided to contract with my studio to fill in the photographic gap that exhisted.

Photographing granite certainly doesn’t rank up there with photographing
supermodels on a Caribbean beach, but it does pose some real challenges.  Architectural granite has brightly polished surfaces.  So every little environmental feature represents a potential reflective flaw in each exposure.  That required very tedious attention to every detail of every shot.  Thank God for
digital photography and the ability to see immediate results in the camera display.  Imagine trying to shoot this assignment on film, waiting for proofs only to find an unwanted reflection!

This assignment also required showing the diverse inventory and expansive warehouse.  Fortunately, like most warehouses a forklift truck and experiences operator were available.  This allowed photographing up in the air to strategically pose staff members in the warehouse.  These images were able to show the expanse of the inventory and warehouse. In addition, I could show customers making their selection and the role of the customer service representatives in the sales process.

Erica decided to enter the final magazine product for competition in the Lake Communicators annual “Apex Awards”.  The result was the project won an Apex – Gold in the Marketing Business To Business category at the November 9, 2011 Awards Ceremony.  Others contributing to the award are:  Villa Beach Communications, Erica Kosinski and Mike Setta Creative Directors, Doug Karn Art Director, Tom Szabo Photographer, Erica Kosinski Copywriter, Debbie Graehling-Tomsic of Graphic Repros the printer.

Congratulations to Erica and everyone who participated.  It was a pleasure to be part of a great creative team helping to make this Apex Award possible.  The assignment was pure enjoyment and let’s face it, recognition like this is a very humbling experience.  My thanks to everyone!

Let’s face it – weddings can be one of the most stressful photography assignments. It gets worse if something goes wrong during the day. The problem that occurs might not even have to do with the photographer. Maybe the flowers were late. Maybe the cake was wrong. It doesn’t matter, at that point the bride or grooms nerves might be shot.

I recently shot a wedding for a “not typical wedding age” couple. You know they weren’t in their late teens or early twenties. In addition, the bride and the groom were of the mind-set, nothing could ruin their day and they were just going to enjoy themselves. That easy-going attitude made shooting their wedding much easier. In addition, they were ready to have fun with the photographer.

Did they have a list of specific shots they wanted? They sure did. Did we get them done? We sure did. But they were having Fun. The end result was the images caught the joy and fun in their face and eyes! They also decided to have fun with some of their poses.

Their attitude sure helped me make the best of a lot of mixed lighting, some close quarters and allowed me to create some images that captured their special day. I hope you enjoy a couple of their images.

Let’s think back to our senior year of high school.  Ok, Ok, maybe for some of you that’s going back a long way, but bear with me here.  Remember how you seemed relaxed.  Didn’t you just feel happy to be a senior?  Friday night  football games were a lot more fun to attend.  Cruising with friends was a blast.

There was a lot to be happy about.  That’s what makes creating high school senior portraits a blast to shoot.  Parents are happy and proud of their child.  The excitement in the subject shows when they are photographed.  All in all, these emotions help the sitting go so much smoother.  Happy people make better subjects.

Here are a couple of proofs from Carry’s sitting.  I think she looks very happy.

Dancing Photographer Participates in “Dancing Under The Stars 2011” Fundraiser

It took 2 to 3 hours per practice, 2 to 3 practices a week, over 5 weeks.  In 4 minutes and 26 seconds it was done!

Photographer Tom Szabo was a celebrity dancer in the local fundraising event “Dancing Under The Stars – 2011”.  The event was held on August 20th, 2011 at La Vera Party Center.  Over 350
people attended the dancing event to help raise funds for both Family Planning Association of NE Ohio and Lifeline, Inc. Both organizations provide service to the local residents.  My goal was to raise $1500.00 total in donations for both organizations.  Thanks to my family and friends I raised over $1800.00.  Thanks to all for your financial support.

A special thank you goes out to my pro dance partner Ms.
Terri Salvatore.  Terri put together a terrific Rumba to the song “You Can Leave Your Hat On” by Tom Jones, from the movie “The Full Monty”.  She did a great job teaching me the rumba and all the extra moves to turn the dance into a nice piece of entertainment.

We didn’t win the dance competition, but we had a lot of fun.  You can see for yourself by watching the video on YouTube – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fi7nJR_SeeQ

Again thanks to everyone and especially Terri!!!

Photography Assingment – Too Good To Be True?

This was an inquiry I received through marketingtool.com  After going through this inquiry, I made up my mind I would not participate in the assignment.  You know what they say about “too-good-to-be-true”.

Hello I will like to confirm if you can shoot a wedding event on the 23rd of November 2011? Please get back to me. at Regards

So I responded and below is the thread for the email listed above

Mark:

Yes, I have Nov 23rd, 2011 open.  Will you and/or your fiance call me at XXX-XXX-XXXX to discuss your details and arrive at pricing and a contract.

Tom Szabo, Photographer

Mark’s reply:
Hello,
Thanks for the mail,Here is a little about the wedding. The wedding is taking place in Denver, Colorado. It is an 7 hours event starting from 9am till 4 pm. It is an indoor event which consist of 100 guest at most, I will like you to cover the reception as well which will start from 2 Pm till 4 pm on that day. I will like the picture to be on a CD, and I don’t have a wedding planner, I plan it by myself. Please reply me by e-mail cos I am physically impaired (Hearing).  You may think about the flight and hotel accommodation, there is provision for that , my flight agent will make arrangement for that. I think with all the details have given to you now,Calculate your fee alone, you should be able to calculate and let me know how much it will cost. Please get back to me as soon as possible. I just contacted you via marketing tools and want to know if you can handle it.
Thanks
Cheers

Mark:

Your email did not allow me to determine if one or two photographers will be required.  So, I’m going to assume that two photographers will be necessary for complete coverage.  Providing 7 hours of coverage will therefore require a 3/4 day (9 hour).  I’ve attached a wedding photography price sheet for your review.  You’ll see that the fee for a 3/4 day , two photographers is $X,XXX.00.  In addition you will need to select your final deliverable(s) and add that to the fee.  You indicated you desire a CD of images as your deliverable.  The fee for that $XXX.00.  Should you decide on additional products, you can add in those fees also.  You would be required to cover all travel, accommodations (2 rooms), meals and car rental expenses.  Since you indicated you have a travel planner,  I’m sure they can make the arrangements and work out direct billing to you for all expenses.

If this meets with your approval, Please let me know and I will email a contract to you.  It will detail the scope of services, deliverable, fees, expense coverage and deposit.  I await your reply.

Tom Szabo, Photographer

By Mark:
Thanks so much….I am very much okay for the price for 2 photographer. Please get back to me and let me know how much I need to pay as initial deposit to get the date reserved. Also get back to me with your name and address so that I can get the check for the deposit sent as soon as possible. I want everything to work out fast cos the date is drawing closer.

Thanks so much

I then email asking Mark why he had to fly two photographers in to Cleveland.  There must be photographers in Denver that can handle the assignment.  At this point I gotten no reply from Mark.  Strange inquiry – wouldn’t you agree?

Mark’s email address is:
You might want to watch for these types of inquiries.  So you see not only do consumers have to watch out for unscrupulous service providers, business owners need to watch for questionable customers.

Portrait Of A Graphic Artist/Illustrator

Let me introduce you to John.  He is a graphic designer and
illustrator.  We both belong to the same
business growth network.  As we were
discussing some new marketing materials for John’s studio, I suggested he
consider a new headshot.

After a review of his marketing materials and a preliminary
discussion, I had a better sense of John’s needs.  When he arrived at the studio, John’s wife
came along.  It was great to have her
join us.  A lot of time guys need our wife
there to tell us the shot looks good or — not!

I wanted to create a look for John that fit his personality
and his craft.  I hope I accomplished
that goal.

Birthday Party Celebration And Underwater Photography

Take a special event like a child birthday, a swimming pool,
a hot summer day and what do you have?  A
great opportunity to photograph kids underwater.  I recently photographed one such birthday
party.

I arrived in advance of the party.  This gave me time to assemble my scuba gear
and set up the digital camera in the Ikelite underwater camera housing with 2
underwater strobes.  After explaining to
all the party-goers the plan, I dropped down on the bottom of the pool and
started shooting away.  The gals were
just as hammy as they could be.  They
really had a good time.  On a hot summer
day, I enjoyed the time on the bottom of the pool also!

His Senior Portrait Session

I really enjoy photographing high school seniors.  Young men and women have fun posing for their portrait.  That enthusiasm often translates into a final image that looks fun and well done.

But – not everyone is like that in front of the camera.  As a photographer you hope to understand the reasons for someone having reservations about their portrait.  Talking with the subject about their issues gives you an opportunity to find the “work-arounds”.  Then take what you’ve learned about that person and go to work.  If you’ve listened and taken their concerns to heart, you should be able to produce good results.

Lexi’s Family Portrait Session

If you thought you saw this post before, you’re mistaken.  That was Cindy!  Although Lexi and Cindy look a lot alike, they’re not the same.  Cindy is a Maltese and Lexi is a Maltese-Poodle.

Lexi’s Mom (aka owner), wanted to do a portrait session with Lexi and the rest of the family.  Mom said it was OK to post Lexi, just not the family.  See readers, you’re not the only one a bit shy.

So anyway, enjoy a couple of images of Lexi.  It’s amazing what you can do with some “training-treats”.  Good girl, Lexi!

Photographer’s Booth Wins “Best Of Show”

For the last three years my studio, A Thomas Image, has participated in the Shop Lake County Expo at the Great Lakes Mall in Mentor, Ohio.  Each year it’s a struggle to find a theme to pull prospects into the booth.  As a photographer the booth needs to appeal to a broad market; Families, High School Seniors, Brides and even Grandparents.  Good News – the show is located in a shopping mall attracting a lot of people.  Bad news – the show is located in a shopping mall and people aren’t necessarily there for a business expo.

This year I decided to incorporate multiple details into the booth.  It had to have a photography theme.  The booth had to be designed to drive traffic to the studio web site and Facebook Fan page.  The booth would also offer a drawing for a portrait package.

Mall shoppers used their camera phone to take their own photo in the booth.

So my solution was to create a 40 inch by 80 inch supersized I-Phone.  The studio web address went across the top of the display.  The display area incorporated a “q-code” for both the studio web site and fan page.  The remaining available phone display space was left open.  The idea was for shoppers at the mall to pose behind the I-Phone prop where someone could take their picture with a camera phone.  Everyone was invited to upload their photo onto the studio Fan Page and share it with their “friends”.  The submission with the most “likes” would win the portrait package door prize.

The last day of the expo started with a breakfast for all the exhibitors.  To my amazement, I was awarded the “Best Of Show” trophy for my booth design.  I really couldn’t believe it happened.  So now I have the challenge to top the booth design for next year.  Oh well, I’ve got plenty of time to work on that.  In addition, I have some other opportunities to use the supersized smart phone prop for other types of promotion.
